The history of greeting cards can be traced all the way back to the ancient Egyptians who used papyrus scrolls to send handwritten well wishes to their loved ones. Fast forward 5,000 years and the typical greeting card hasn’t really changed much, if you think about it. 

This didn’t sit right with my parents who, back in the late 80s, decided that some innovation in the product format was over due. They introduced the first ever range of musical greeting cards in the UK, and continued to quietly disrupt the format, pioneering musical, light up and pop up cards for some of the largest social expressions brands in the world. 

Growing up in this environment definitely made it difficult to look at a regular greeting card the same way. But we honestly believe that the satisfaction of pressing a button and seeing colourful lights flash in sync with that epic song is enough to make anyone feel like they’re a kid again. Giving that feeling to your loved ones is powerful. And it gives what we do meaning.

In 2019, we started working with Paperchase, the design-led stationery brand, and were given free rein to introduce different, sometimes wild, ideas for their line of “Innovation Cards”. When Paperchase went out of business in 2023, we were hit hard and it took a while to recover but luckily we managed to stay afloat and keep all of our brilliant team.

And we realised that the cards we were making really were spreading a lot of joy. Lots of lovely people loved our cards and that was something to be proud of. And yet there was still a lot that could’ve been done differently, in particular more sustainably. And so we formed Lumibop, to channel all our crazy ideas for the most awe-inspiring greeting cards, no holds barred, without having a negative impact on the environment.
